Vice President, Research and Development Operations
An analytical chemist with nearly 40 years of experience, Bert Clayton serves as Vice President of Research and Development Operations at Piedmont Animal Health. In this role, he provides oversight for all R&D projects, from proof-of-concept through submission to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval.
An expert in drug development for multiple dosage forms and the associated analytical chemistries that support them, Clayton joined Piedmont Animal Health in 2004 as Director of Quality Assurance. Most recently, as Senior Technical Director, he managed all manufacturing, analytical and clinical activities that ushered five drugs through FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) approval process.
Previously, as Manager of Analytical and Residue Studies at EN-CAS Analytical Laboratories, Clayton led a series of laboratory groups responsible for good laboratory practice analytical studies for the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries in support of registrations through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He also served as Senior Scientist with Ciba-Geigy, where he generated chemical residue information for evaluation of new research opportunities and developed methods for new compounds that were in development.
Clayton earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981.
